Bead Info Home

Amazonite is a great example of an opaque stone that would be perfect for spring. It is typically an Ice Blue to Pale Aqua Green stone, except for Russian Amazonite, which is bright Teal Green with streaks of white. The lighter colored Amazonite looks very similar to Opaque Aqua Quartz, but Amazonite tends to have a waxy look while Aqua Quartz have lots of fine internal fractures that almost look like slushy ice. Amazonite is a member of the feldspar family, which means that they are actually related Moonstones and Labradorites. Although Amazonite does not have the rainbow colored flashes like its cousins, its own beauty has been recognized ever since the Ancient Egyptians began using the stone in jewelry and ornaments.

Although there are deposits of Amazonite in Brazil, the stone actually has not been found in the Amazon region. In addition to Brazil and Russia, Amazonite can also be found in Colorado and India. The stone often forms large crystals, so you can frequently find large Amazonite beads that are great for centerpieces. Large briolettes, freeform nuggets, or carved flower beads made of Amazonite will match very well with Aqua Quartz, Peruvian Opal, and Opaque Aquamarine accent beads!

The soothing soft green of the Amazonite is ideal to wear during spring and into the summer. It is also a relatively affordable stone, so you should consider using Amazonite if you want to make a casual necklace to wear on your spring or summer vacation!
